Ukrainians are making gains as Russia loses its staging ground

The introduction of Russian jet-powered Shahed and Geran-5 strike drones compresses defensive engagement windows, reducing baseline interception rates from roughly 90% down to 50–70% and challenging conventional air defense networks. To counter this speed advantage without depleting costly guided missiles, Ukraine is deploying F-16 and MiG-29 fighters utilizing 20mm rotary cannons alongside camera- and AI-directed automated gun turrets around critical infrastructure. Complementing these gun platforms, Kyiv is developing high-speed interceptor drones and low-cost micro-missiles, targeting a domestic production rate of roughly 400 interceptors monthly to build an economically sustainable counter-mass. However, sustaining this layered posture introduces critical logistical vulnerabilities, as daily expenditure rates of 5,000 to 6,000 rounds of 20mm cannon ammunition generate acute supply dependencies on European partners such as Germany and Poland. Ultimately, Moscow’s reliance on high-velocity strike platforms yields diminishing operational returns as Ukraine field-tests scalable, affordable interceptors, shifting the air war into an industrial contest of production volume and cost-exchange efficiency.
