Libya Opens New Front in Sudan’s Civil War
Sudan’s civil war has taken a dramatic turn with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) opening a new front from across the Libyan border. This unexpected escalation marks the first time the RSF has launched an offensive from outside Sudan, capturing strategic positions near the Libya-Sudan-Egypt tri-border zone. With backing from Libya’s Haftar-aligned Libyan National Army, the RSF has secured new supply lines and challenged the Sudanese Armed Forces in a region vital for regional smuggling and arms trafficking. The move has heightened tensions with Egypt and risks drawing Libya further into Sudan’s conflict. As overlapping alliances and rivalries deepen, the tri-border zone is fast becoming a new epicenter in northeastern Africa’s interconnected wars.
