Russia turns Geran drones into faster, smarter and more evasive weapons

The systemic adaptation of Russia's Geran drone platform fundamentally alters the operational calculus of the air war in Ukraine by neutralizing low-cost asymmetric interception methods. Through the integration of jet propulsion, high-G maneuverability, and extended operational range, these upgraded munitions systematically outpace the slower, propeller-driven interceptor drones previously fielded by Ukraine. Furthermore, the incorporation of onboard electronic warfare suites and optical terminal guidance enhances survivability against localized jamming and counter-UAS measures. Consequently, Ukraine is forced into a severe economic disadvantage, compelled to expend scarce, high-tier conventional air defense missiles to neutralize threats that can no longer be checked by economical means.
