Kyiv develops domestic reconnaissance drone to replace DJI Mavic on frontlines
The Ukrainian defense industry is currently transitioning toward technological sovereignty by developing the Slavik, an indigenous alternative to the ubiquitous DJI Mavic reconnaissance drone. Developed by Vyriy, this platform aims to replicate the operational utility of commercial quadcopters while integrating military-grade enhancements such as extended endurance, optical zoom, and superior electronic warfare resilience. The strategic objective is to decouple frontline tactical awareness from foreign supply chains and commercial export limitations. By mirroring the user interface of existing systems, the Slavik ensures minimal retraining requirements for active units. This move signifies a maturation of the Ukrainian drone ecosystem, shifting from the mass production of expendable strike assets to the sustained manufacturing of sophisticated reconnaissance platforms. The initiative represents a pivotal step in securing a continuous and adaptable domestic supply of critical battlefield intelligence tools.
