Russia expected quick dominance but Ukraine denied control of the skies
The Russian Aerospace Forces failed to establish air superiority due to a flawed doctrinal focus on static infrastructure rather than mobile assets. Ukraine’s pre-emptive dispersal of S-300 and Buk systems created an asymmetric environment, forcing Russian aviation into low-altitude envelopes where they faced increased vulnerability to MANPADS and mobile SAM units. This tactical shift prevented the formation of safe corridors, stalling ground offensives and exposing logistics to aerial interdiction. The conflict highlights a systemic divergence in command structures, where Ukrainian mission command outpaced Russian centralized control. Currently, the environment is characterized by mutual aerial denial, with Russia pivoting to standoff strikes and glide bombs to mitigate platform attrition. The inability to secure the sky in early 2022 remains the primary constraint on Russian strategic maneuver.
