Ukraine’s modular Sargan launches drones, lays mines and carries weapons

Recently, a Ukrainian Sargan naval drone was making its way through the Black Sea to strike a Russian military target. However, a Russian Geran two kamikaze drone intercepted and destroyed the Sargan before it reached its target. Interestingly, the incident drew greater attention to the Ukrainian Sargan naval drone system, which had largely remained out of public view.

The Sargan naval drone is not a new Ukrainian invention; Kyiv has been working on the development of this naval drone family since April two thousand twenty four. The first version of this naval drone was designed to ram directly into an enemy target and detonate. However, over time, Ukrainian engineers transformed Sargan into a modular naval drone platform that can be equipped with various types of equipment and weapons as needed, allowing it to be used for different military operation.

For example, the Sargan D version can carry small FPV drones toward an enemy target, then launch them from closer to the target. Meanwhile, the Sargan N version is capable of carrying naval mines and automatically deploying them at designated locations in the sea. On the other hand, the Sargan EW variant serves as a floating electronic warfare platform for the Ukrainians. It carries a suite of electronic warfare systems capable of jamming drone control frequencies, spoofing satellite signals, and interfering with identification systems. In addition, the Sargan R version has been developed to protect other Ukrainian vessels from enemy drone attacks. It carries surface to air missiles, which can be used to engage enemy drones and other aerial targets. Of all the Sargan variants, the most talked about is the Sargan three thousand, which carries guns and missiles that allow it to directly engage Russian military vessels and other targets.

The Ukrainian Sargan naval drone is no longer limited to the experimental stage; it has already been deployed on the battlefield. For example, Ukrainian forces used Sargan naval drones to strike the Sivash drilling platform in the Golitsyn gas field area near the Crimean coast, where Russian forces were using the platform as an observation and communications center. The strike destroyed equipment used by Russian forces to control strike drones. According to Ukrainian sources, Sargan has also undergone experimental use in the Odesa region and at a reservoir in Kyiv. Moreover, Russian media outlets claim that Ukraine is currently producing a maximum of twenty five Sargan units per month across its various variants. However, other sources indicate that Ukraine had already produced more than one hundred Sargan drones by October two thousand twenty five, suggesting that production has been ramping up since mid two thousand twenty five.

The Ukrainian Sargan naval drone’s growing use on the battlefield has raised new concerns for Russian forces. Until now, Russian forces largely viewed most Ukrainian naval drones approaching their vessels or naval assets as threats intended to strike directly. But Sargan’s multipurpose capabilities have changed that assumption. Its modular design allows the same platform to be configured for different missions depending on operational requirements. As a result, it has become far more difficult for Russia to identify each incoming Sargan family naval drone, determine its actual purpose, and take the appropriate countermeasures.

Overall, Sargan shows a significant shift in Ukraine’s approach to naval drone warfare. Instead of building a separate drone for every task, Ukraine is using one adaptable platform. With limited military budgets and manpower in Ukraine, this is a more cost effective approach that simplifies production and reduces the logistical burden of maintaining multiple specialized fleets. This common platform also gives Ukraine greater freedom to decide how to use its available drones based on the situation. For Russian forces, however, this creates a new challenge. An approaching Sargan may not reveal its purpose until it gets close enough to be assessed, giving Russian forces less time to identify the threat and decide how to respond. In the future, this could push Russia to find better ways to distinguish between different Sargan variants from a distance. Until then, Russia may have to keep a wider defensive presence around its ships and coastal infrastructure, which could force it to spread its naval assets more thinly across the Black Sea.
