Russia launches new all weather radar satellites for global reconnaissance
The launch of the Obzor-R radar reconnaissance satellite from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome signifies an attempt to rectify systemic deficiencies in Russia's space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance architecture. Equipped with the Kasatka-R X-band radar and an Active Electronically Scanned Array antenna, the platform provides one-meter resolution and all-weather imaging capabilities, essential for monitoring logistics and defensive positions. While the planned four-satellite constellation aims to replace aging low-Earth orbit assets, its operational viability is threatened by international sanctions on critical electronic components. Technical uncertainties remain regarding its activation status and resistance to long-term economic pressures.
