Russian long-range artillery modernization cannot close the precision technology gap
Hi-mars has become a decisive factor in Ukraine, delivering rapid, precise strikes that have exposed critical weaknesses in Russian logistics. Russia’s response, the Sarma artillery system, seeks to emulate its performance but falls short in range, accuracy, and operational flexibility. While the Sarma carries heavier rockets and experimental munitions, it cannot match Hi-mars’ digital integration and NATO-grade coordination. The system’s slower reload and reliance on legacy structures reduce its survivability and tactical utility in modern warfare. Russia’s investment in Sarma demonstrates both its ambition and the constraints it faces in replicating advanced Western technology. For the time being, the Sarma is more a symbol of intent than a battlefield equalizer.
