Russian forces mount a major counteroffensive to regain lost ground.

Today, the most intense news is coming from the Liman direction.

Russians just unleashed a massive swarm of fixed-wing attack drones in an attempt to halt the Ukrainian advance in its tracks. Video footage shows how Russians launched waves of Molniya drones across the river and into the newly gained Ukrainian territory. These Russian Molniya drones are equipped with heavy explosives and sometimes even anti-tank landmines that cause major destruction when they hit. The dedicated interceptor drone unit codenamed Destroyer shared footage showing the interception of over sixty-six of these enemy strike drones over the ongoing Ukrainian Vivaldi operation in a single day. The Ukrainians have fully integrated interception capabilities into their frontline units, with the Destroyer unit integrated with the Ukrainian sixty-sixth Mechanized Brigade using dispersed radar systems to launch an interceptor drone within a minute of detecting an enemy UAV. Using various interceptor drones of similar design, they are then able to neutralize the Russian waves with remarkable efficiency.

When looking at the situation on the ground, Ukrainians are advancing way faster than the Russians expected, and liberating far more territory than they had imagined. This even caused problems for Ukrainians however, who were advancing so deep that they threatened to move out of the cover of their fire-support units. The entire Ukrainian kill-chain of observation and strike drones, artillery, logistics, and command staff now has to be moved to the new line of contact. By launching the intense Molniya drone barrage, Russians were attempting to strike Ukrainians in the midst of this movement, hoping to prevent and undermine Ukrainians from getting ready to cross the river next. However, they were not expecting Ukraine to have already moved forward their frontline drone interception units, and their barrage was taken out in mid-air.

Notably, Russians were trying to do more than just strike Ukrainian support units on the move, but were preparing to follow up with a major counteroffensive of their own. As Russians cannot afford to lose their bridgehead across the Zherebets River completely, they are desperately trying to take it back. The massive wave of frontline strike drones was the fire preparation that Russians could have needed for a counterattack to succeed. Counterattacking while Ukrainians are still reorganizing would be their only real chance of making any rapid clawback.  

The reason why Russians cannot lose the bridgehead is that it allows Ukrainians to maintain a much more stable defense of Liman itself. Due to the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Russians are now over twenty-two kilometers removed from the nearest logistical strongpoint supplying Liman. This puts Ukrainian logistic hubs out of range of Russian tube and rocket artillery, as well as Russian FPV drones.

While Russian FPV drones have the capability on paper to strike this deep, using FPV drones at such long ranges requires larger fixed-wing drones to serve as relays. And Ukrainians have just clearly demonstrated their capability to rapidly detect and destroy these fixed-wing type drones with ease, allowing supplies and reinforcements to arrive at the needed positions with no delay.

Overall, Ukrainians just destroyed the most massive Russian fire preparation launched in a single day. While Russians attempted to strike Ukrainian support units and staff while on the move and take advantage of their destruction with a follow-up counterattack, the cleverly integrated drone defenses were able to neutralize the Russian threat. As the Ukrainian kill-chain is being moved up to the new line of contact, Russian forces will soon be faced with a deadly choice: either throw their men into the Ukrainian meatgrinder, or suffer whatever the Ukrainian general staff has planned for them next.
