Russia to declare war at any moment as strikes rain down on the NATO border

Today, there is dangerous news from Europe.

Here, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Europe faces decisive months in defending its security, as Russia's war could begin at any moment now, with Russian escalation attempts on the rise. Those concerns gained new urgency after Russian strikes reached within approximately two kilometers of Poland.

A Russian drone struck a passenger locomotive at Yahodyn, directly beside the Polish border. Despite passengers having time to be evacuated, nobody was killed by pure chance, as the train that got struck was switched at the last moment with a separate diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and European security officials. Another train carrying former Cia Director David Petraeus was reportedly still nearby, with the gathering of former and current European and Nato officials hinting that the time and the target of the strike were not a coincidence, but an actual attempt by Russian to strike them.

Ukraine’s railway operator said the diplomatic train would have been struck and confirmed that its departure time was adjusted secretly exactly to avoid any risks, while Russia acknowledged striking railway infrastructure in western Ukraine, underlining the intentional attack extremely close to Nato territory. That serves the clear purpose of Russia escalating beyond a pure intimidation effect, as European officials supporting Ukraine traveled through an area that Russian forces demonstrated they will strike.

Poland's Operational Command stated that Russian drones operated and struck targets just several to a dozen kilometers from Poland's border, prompting Polish military aircraft to deploy. Air raid sirens sounded in six districts, while border checks were suspended overnight, as a Russian drone hit a truck around eight hundred meters from the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing.

Potentially making such attacks more dangerous is Russia’s expanding satellite infrastructure, as Moscow is developing the Rassvet low-Earth-orbit constellation, intended to provide communications coverage that could support exactly such military applications. Russia previously stated that their goal is to possess uninterrupted precision-drone control throughout all of Ukraine by the end of next year and potentially over Europe in three years. However, the strike on the border proves that Russia’s capability has now already expanded to the point that it can be used for strikes on Europe, likely by adjusting the positioning of the satellites as they still only have a limited number in orbit. Combined with plans to launch new satellites, such expanded satellite coverage will increase Russia’s ability to conduct reconnaissance, strikes, or sabotage far beyond the immediate battlefield.

Following recent Russian drone attacks near its border, Polish military engineers began reinforcing border infrastructure at several checkpoints. Polish troops are now constructing blast protection using containers filled with sand or gravel and establishing additional observation and guard positions, while the Polish Defense Minister, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, said recent Russian actions threaten European security more than ever. The significance extends beyond protecting individual checkpoints, as Poland must now consider the possibility that infrastructure immediately across its border can repeatedly become a Russian target, creating danger from explosions, debris, or deliberate escalation only meters from Nato territory,  dramatically reducing the geographical buffer separating Russia’s war from the alliance.

Overall, European governments are consequently sounding increasingly serious warnings about escalation while strengthening exposed infrastructure and debating how to respond when Russian attacks approach alliance territory, as Russia's path of escalation has removed any doubts from the equation, and Nato leaders are now simply saying it is just a matter of time before Russia attacks. The strike beside Poland was therefore both a military action against Ukraine and a powerful warning to Europe that its officials are also in the Russian crosshairs for supporting Ukraine. Whether the strike was meant to kill or intimidate,  its message is difficult to ignore: Russia is bringing its strike campaign directly to Nato’s doorstep, steadily narrowing the distance separating the war in Ukraine from a potential World War Three, with Putin obviously ready to wage his war beyond the borders of the current battlefield.
