Chechens never saw it coming: Worst single-day losses since the 2nd Chechen war

Today, there is interesting news from the Sumy direction.

Here, the Ukrainian forces turned the redeployment of Chechen special forces into a slaughter. Russia’s plans to launch another assault through the border suffered the biggest massacre after one of their own betrayed them.

Along Ukraine’s northern border, Russian forces have been steadily increasing pressure since the beginning of the year, particularly in the Sumy region. Their goal is to force Ukraine to stretch its defenses across a wider frontline by expanding the border area into a grey zone, where positions are often several kilometers apart. Through this, Russia aims to tie down Ukrainian reserves and weaken the defense on more critical fronts like Donetsk and Zaporizhia. Even limited infiltration inside the Sumy Region carries risk; if left unchecked, it can evolve into a larger incursion that threatens regional capitals and logistics routes.

A key role in these operations has been assigned to the Russian Akhmat special forces units. The Chechen formation is often referred to by both Ukrainians and the Russians as TikTok soldiers due to their reputation for staging media-friendly operations rather than engaging in sustained high-intensity combat.

Despite this image, their deployments still pose a real threat, and in this case, Ukrainian intelligence indicated that a roughly two hundred strong Akhmat unit was preparing a coordinated plan to seize up to fifteen settlements in the Sumy region, which would have forced Ukraine to divert significant forces and drone operators to contain it.

However, what Russian commanders did not realize was that their plans were already compromised. Ukrainian military intelligence had managed to infiltrate the Akhmat unit itself, as in the middle of last year, they recruited a member of the formation, who began passing sensitive information from within. The operation reached a critical breakthrough when the agent installed listening devices inside a commander’s meeting room by using an FPV drone to place the bug. This provided Ukrainian intelligence with direct access to operational planning at the highest and most sensitive level.

Intercepted recordings revealed not only the details of upcoming operations on the border, but also serious internal weaknesses. Akhmat commander Apti Alaudinov was heard openly admitting that many of his artillery crews and tank operators lacked basic combat proficiency.

Despite years of war, he acknowledged that the unit remained poorly prepared for real battlefield conditions, which only further reinforces their infamous nickname. However, the most important intelligence on Akhmat troop redeployments allowed Ukrainian planners to map out movements, staging areas, and vulnerabilities with precision.

As the Akhmat unit began redeploying in preparation for its offensive, Ukrainian forces were already waiting. What followed was a systematic devastation of the Chechen force in motion. Coordinated by Ukraine’s military intelligence, Ukrainian forces struck the enemy repeatedly during movement and concentration phases. In a fit of irony, Ukrainians used the Shamanbat special operations unit to aide in the strikes, which is partially composed of anti-Kadyrov Chechen soldiers fighting for Ukraine.

Columns of vehicles carrying dozens of fighters were hit by FPV drones, destroying them on the spot. Artillery targeted Chechen groups while still on the road, unable to disperse or take cover. Staging areas, equipment depots, fuel storages, and communication systems were systematically laid to waste. Over the course of the Russian redeployments, the Akhmat unit suffered devastating losses with at least forty-one killed, eighty-seven wounded, and more than one hundred missing soldiers. In addition, over one hundred and sixty Russian vehicles and significant amounts of equipment were destroyed or damaged.

The scale of the losses marked the heaviest blow to Akhmat forces since the start of the full-scale invasion. At the same time, it exposed the vulnerability of units that rely on mobility and surprise when their plans are compromised in advance. The psychological impact was equally significant. Ukrainian Ichkerian fighters directly addressed Chechen soldiers as the massacre dragged on, urging them not to fight for Russia and to surrender instead, highlighting both the futility of the operation and the heavy losses they had suffered, while calling back to the over one hundred Akhmat soldiers unaccounted for.

Overall, this operation stands out as one of the most effective Ukrainian intelligence-driven strikes of the war. By infiltrating the enemy, planting a bug inside a Russian headquarters, and intercepting command-level discussions, Ukraine gained complete visibility over the planned incursion. The result was the elimination and wounding of more than two hundred fifty enemy personnel and the destruction of a major assault force before it could act. In doing so, Ukraine not only prevented another Russian infiltration attempt but also avoided the need to divert valuable forces to counter it afterward, securing the northern border at a critical moment.
