Russian relief columns battle repeated ambushes on routes to besieged Mali bases

Recently, another Russian military helicopter has been shot down and destroyed in a planned ambush in Mali. The ambush was conducted by the group known as J-nim, shooting the helicopter down with a heavy machine gun positioned in a hidden location. The militant group has been carrying out a wave of intense attacks against Russian and Malian military bases located in the area for several days, as part of the second Tuareg offensive. As the situation is deteriorating rapidly for Russian and Junta forces, Russian helicopter are being dispatched round the clock to deliver supplies and provide close air support for besieged Russian Africa Corps and Malian junta forces. This is where J-nim forces prepared an ambush for the helicopter, shooting it down as it approached the area.

Since April, a series of coordinated ambushes by Tuareg separatists and J-nim insurgents has forced Russian forces to increasingly deploy their helicopters and other aerial assets to protect their convoys. These helicopters conduct aerial surveillance to detect potential threats on the ground and help ensure the security of the convoys. However, even these powerful Russian helicopters have failed to fully protect the convoys from the continuous, coordinated, and successful attacks carried out by the opposing forces in Mali.

Most recently, in an effort to recapture cities in northern Mali that are currently under the control of armed groups, the Russian Africa Corps and the Malian junta government dispatched a massive military convoy from Sevare toward Gao. The convoy consisted of more than two hundred vehicles, including armored personnel carriers, tanks, logistics vehicles, and various other military assets. Footage shows that as the large convoy of the Russian Africa Corps and Malian armed forces approached Gao, it came under a truly massive ambush by Tuareg and J-nim soldiers. This was already the 4th well-documented disaster that Russian and Junta forces found themselves in. Following the attack, several vehicles from the convoy were destroyed. Additionally, more than fifty Malian junta soldiers were reportedly killed, while dozens of others were captured by the insurgents. According to journalists affiliated with the Malian junta government, members of the Russian Africa Corps placed Malian soldiers in front of them as a shield for their own protection and fled the battlefield as soon as the ambushed began, resulting in very few casualties among Russian personnel.

Meanwhile, in addition to carrying out coordinated attacks on Russian convoys in Mali, the J-nim insurgent group has effectively turned key roads used by Russian and Malian military vehicles into death traps. Due to the low population density in northern Mali, the region’s main roads are generally long, open, and straight, with very limited alternative routes. As a result, Russian Africa Corps and Malian junta forces rely heavily on these roads to transport supplies, move troops, and conduct security operations at various bases across the north. Taking advantage of this vulnerability, J-nim fighters place improvised explosive devices, or IED’s, at various points along these routes. These explosives are then detonated when Russian and Junta vehicles pass through the area. For example, after the massive two hundred vehicle-strong convoy was defeated, another military convoy was sent toward Gao to rescue the stranded personnel.  However, while advancing near the town of Gossi, the convoy was hit by a series of linked-together IED’s, damaging and destroying over a dozen vehicles.

The J-nim insurgent group’s continuous improvised explosive device attacks on key road networks are making military movement increasingly dangerous for the Russian Africa Corps and Malian forces. As a result, they are being forced to rely on additional security measures, armed escorts, and alternative routes to transport troops, supplies, and military equipment, gradually making their military operations in Mali increasingly complex. At the same time, to reach besieged bases and isolated areas, they are having to fight their way forward almost constantly and establish new secure routes. Even a single mistake during such operations can result in loss of life, placing the personnel of the Russian Africa Corps and Malian forces under growing military and psychological pressure.

Overall, the activities of the Tuareg separatist and J-nim insurgent groups in Mali are steadily expanding beyond the country’s northern regions into central Mali, significantly complicating the security situation for the Russian Africa Corps and the Malian junta government. At the same time, the insurgent’s methods of attack are continuously evolving, giving the ongoing conflict in Mali an increasingly new dimension. In addition to direct frontline engagements, J-nim has effectively turned key road networks, supply lines, and military communication routes into active battlefields. Its sustained attacks are gradually eroding the military capabilities of the Russian Africa Corps and the Malian junta while placing them under mounting military and strategic pressure. Although the Russian Africa Corps and the Malian government maintain advantages in technology, heavy weaponry, air- and manpower, they are finding it increasingly difficult to counter the insurgent’s prolonged, decentralized, and attrition-based strategy. As a result, it is becoming increasingly uncertain how much longer the Russian Africa Corps and the Malian junta government will be able to maintain their influence on the ground in Mali.
